I have just found out from my father, John Doman that the plinth of this memorial was designed by my Grandfather, Harry Doman. Both he and my father were architects and worked during part of their lives for Basingstoke Borough Council. I believe my Grandfather also designed Barclays Bank in Basingstoke whilst in private practise.

Popley is well into its regeneration. The most problematic families were rehoused elsewhere, (ironically in area's that were considered nicer once) when a lot of the badly designed parts of the estate where bulldozed, and nicer modern new builds for shared ownership and affordable rent meant decent working families have moved in. It is quite, and alot more pleasant to look at with lots of green spaces, and of course parks, and the Carpenter Downs Woods. The area is served well with decent schools, and good transport/road links, and higher than average employment rates. I was determined to move out 5/6 years ago but am glad i stayed as Popley has become better than some of the other area's that used to look down on us. Guess every dog has their day :)

Moved from description:
This mall has a problem with baddies in Corvettes chasing other drivers within its confines. This problem was documented in the Series 12 episode 6 of Top Gear where such a Corvette chased Jeremy Clarkson around in the new 2009 Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta's maneuverability allowed it to escape the mall, while the Corvette was left crashed into a display of Terry Bears.

Chineham IS NOT "a suburban estate in Basingstoke", but rather a civil parish near Basingstoke. The Chineham business Park is not in Chineham (it is in Basingstoke).

It's not really 'bisected' by the former Roman road, rather bounded on its western edge by it. Attempts by developers to expand west of the Roman road are certain to meet with fierce local resistance.

The reference to the real railway in the caption is incorrect. The line DID pass through the site of the roundabout (which wasn't built until long after the railway closed), and the piece of track is more or less on the original alignment. The course of the line can be clearly traced by boundaries and trees on the aerial photograph, on an alignment roughly NNW to SSE. Further north it picks up the line of the ring road, and to the south of Basingstoke it can also be traced across the M3 to Cliddesden and beyond.
